The capstone was a challenge, but not too intimidating. I enjoyed putting it together in a way that leads the viewer through the site. I really wanted to combine my marketing understanding to the site, and not just allow it to be a landing place of a bunch of thoughts. I hope that the site is helpful to at least a few teachers, and inspires some to look further.
I use iMovie for the final presentation, and enjoyed using it through the past 3 semesters. My big take away from the program was around transliteracy and how that pertains to all forms of media not just technology. I think about this is relation to sense-making. Looking at the gap of understanding, and methodically building knowledge base. I used this skill when planning each step of my capstone. Being able to truly see the audience, student or otherwise, was a great filter to build up and strengthen. I apologize for this brief entry, I typed the entire post and lost it, so I tried to speak to different aspect of my learning. Thanks for all the help everyone!

My audience encompasses other teachers, encouraging them to adopt social emotional learning informed tools to support the whole child. I plan to start by creating an engaging tag line that asks how we can become more responsible for our students' social emotional learning and growth. On my learn more page, I plan to include a survey that educators and administrators can complete in order to see their SEL competence, followed by an email that will provide their results and suggestions for growth. I feel that this will also validate to teachers that this is a part of their duties. In Loco Parentis is an important creed for me, I hope to pass that excitement on to teachers. I plan to put a flipped lesson plan on the learn more page, the model is effective to reduce anxiety, giving an example of what teachers can do within instruction to promote social emotional learning. I also plan to promote the use of trauma-informed approaches, restorative practices, and other effective tools. Part of the importance for this awareness is also discovered by covering the ACE study, which shows how adverse childhood experiences lead to negative health outcomes as adults. As educators we're in the unique position to influence and dissuade this negative digression.
The video is going quite well. I've decided to simplify it a bit, instead of using animations, I'm going to use images and panning. I found that using Pixlr online editor made it easy to make multiple frames to create a flip book effect. This should do the trick.
The only other thought that comes up is whether the video should introduce the site. I've decided to utilize it in this way, to the video will introduce the concept of SEL, and also share about the tools on the site. I'm approaching this project from a marketing approach. I understand that many of these sites will not be used after the program concludes, but it seems like a good practice to try and compel visitors to engage with the site. A good critical friend, offers both positive and constructive feedback. It's so easy to patronize our peers when asked for feedback; being a critical friend means stepping back from that pressure to actually be helpful. This involves stepping back from the ego, and protection of our own ideas. There are some great models out there to support CF, one is the sandwich model, giving one positive, then constructive, and finishing with a positive. Also, with this, using affective statements, "I noticed", "I felt", "I heard"; also using "I wonder" when verbalizing constructive feedback is helpful to make the information approachable.
I'll be away this week most days, so I do not plan on meeting with peers. I understand my process pretty well, I'm fine working independently, this project seems very straight forward. |
AuthorAs a teacher and community advocate I strive to remedy the challenges of adverse childhood experiences (ACE), poverty and violence. I'm intrigued by the motivation that is cultivated by different supportive and discouraging learning environment, and how overcoming the achievement gap can transform our society. Archives
